Drafts are tremendously annoying and indicate loss of thermal insulation in windows. So, air can pass from the outside to the inside or vice versa. It leads to your heating and cooling system working overtime year-round to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors and rising utility bills. This is one of the biggest problems that requires immediate window replacement.

Presence of Mould and Condensation

If you notice condensation in your windows, it’s another sign of insulation loss. Condensation formation means frames have lost their function as a thermal barrier and can’t keep the interior well insulated anymore. Over time, condensation can expand to the walls around the windows and trigger mold growth, which is harmful to the health and structure of your house. 

Excessive Noise From Outside

Almost always, a window with lost thermal insulation capabilities is no longer able to provide sound insulation. It leads to excessive outside noise penetrating our indoors and decreasing living comfort. So, if you suddenly notice more street noise indoors, it’s time to replace your windows.

Difficulty Opening and Closing Windows

If you struggle to open or close your windows, consider changing them. It can indicate a warped frame or excessively worn-out opening/closing mechanisms. It can also compromise the security of the windows, a barrier that becomes easier to overcome by any malicious intruders and is less protective from the weather. In short, if your windows are squeaking, sticking, not sliding smoothly, or not closing/opening, you should replace them. 

Deteriorated Appearance

Sometimes, just appearances signal that you need to replace your windows. Some signs regarding window appearance include yellowed or less intense color, peeling paint, discolored or cracked frame, loose, dry, or damaged gaskets, scratches and dents, and cracked or chipped glass. 

The Best Time to Replace Windows

Spring and fall are the most recommended seasons to complete any home repair work, including window replacement. Mild midseason temperatures reduce the inconvenience associated with temporary exposures of the home to the weather. Temperature swings in summer or winter are also avoided, minimizing discomfort for home occupants. Fall is particularly the best time. You don’t need to turn on the heaters, thus avoiding heat loss during the window replacement process.
